It is said that: He who would search for pearls must dive below. The pearl is very rare substance found oceans. Since ancient times peals are used as form of jewelry or a piece of art. It is a rear and precious thing in the world. Pearls are not only associated with wealth, but are symbolic of purity and dignity. Ancient Rome had paintings which showed the presence of pearls. It was considered a status symbol by the kings and queens. Pearls were gifted to the royal men and women in ancient times. Hindu mythology associates them with the moon god and a number of mythological animals. Though the pearl is not a mineral, it is still considered as an important gem amongst the traditional nine gems.
Oysters are responsible for producing pearls. Pearls are worn as jewelry but it is actually the excreta of the oyster, which is a soft bodied marine creature. The process of pearl formation starts when a foreign particle enters the oyster. The particle gets stuck within the oyster and for some reasons unable to get out. Thus, to expel this particle, the oyster deposits extremely thin, concentric layers of calcium carbonate. This deposit continues and between three to seven years a pearl is formed. There are mainly two types of pearls freshwater pearls and sea water pearls. Freshwater pearls--found freshwater mussels in lakes, rivers, creeks, or ponds. Often irregular in shape, but also can be perfectly round Seawater pearls--found in salt water that is on a bay, ocean, gulf, or sea. These also can be irregular in shape when natural, although the best cultured ones are known for their perfect fine round shape. Each type may be either natural (nature made) or cultured (man made).A separate category may also include pearls from snails, as most pearls come from bivalve mussels or oysters.
Pearls were mainly used in traditional jewelry but nowadays Pearls are no longer delegated to just traditional accessories and bridal wear. They look great even on the modern outfit like blue jeans.
